What does a seed

think of as it rests

in a tomb

in the darkness

for a thousand years?

What does it feel

when at last the air shifts?

Can it sense the not-aloneness?

Hear the exclamation of wonder?

Look what I have found!

What miracle is wrought

when moisture and warmth

soak through the wrinkled skin

into the seed’s heart.

Does it shout to itself

alive

     alive

         I am alive
