Prayer for the Everyday

For how many years now?

You sat on your end of the sofa.

I sat on mine.

Never    ever    the other way round.

Your glasses went just there

on the end table

in the faded blue case.

When we left for a day of worldly pursuits

where did you reach for your watch?

Never the countertop. Never the drawer.

Always      always     atop the microwave.

You are gone now but

your end of the sofa remains.

Your end of the sofa it will always be.

Your glasses wait in their case

on the end table. Just so.

I may wear your watch but

at the end of the day it will

always always

go back atop the microwave.

A sofa. A glasses case.

A watch. A microwave.

It is through small rituals

that the mundane

become sacred.

            Amen.
